Season 07/08

Final League Position: 3rd P14 W9 D1 L4 F72 A38 Points 28

A Good Season

All in all, it has been a good season for the U12's. Third in the league and only 4 defeats all season would probably keep most Premiership managers in a job (except Chelsea and Liverpool, of course). So, it looks like Mike and Paul are safe for another season at least! The most pleasing aspect of the teams performance has been the effort and commitment of everyone involved. The players have worked hard in training and matches; the parents have worked hard ferrying players around, cheering from the sidelines, making bacon rolls, carrying goals and nets to and fro and washing kit. Most of all, special thanks to Mike and Paul for giving up so much of their valuable time to coach the team.

It has been a real pleasure to watch the boys play and the improvement this season has been very noticeable. There is a good balance in the team and every player has had moments where they have really changed the outcome of a match. Particularly memorable was Henry's goal keeping heroics in the nail-biting 3-3 draw with FC Chippenham. But it would be unfair to single out a single player as they have all worked so hard and contributed so much to the cause. So well played to Jeremy, Rory, Aneiron, Lewis, Harry S, Harry W, Josher, Josh, Mas, Callum, Elias, Alexander, Alastair, Sam and Seb.

Lets hope the summer training goes well and the team and the coaches enjoy a well earned break from the league. Europe has to be a real possibility next season, or if not, how about Cornwall?

Match of the Season!

What a game at Stanley Park on Sunday! Marshfield showed great character to fight back from 2-0 down to level at 2-2, thanks to strike partners Jeremy and Rory, only to then concede a third. A frantic finale in an end-to-end game, saw Callum hit the post for Marshfield before Lewis finally grabbed the equaliser, with a delicate chip. Chippenham weren't done yet though and only a string of out-standing saves from Henry in goal, kept hold of a very well deserved point. Great credit to both teams for playing some great football and for never giving up.

Scorers for Marshfield: Jeremy B, Rory S, Lewis H

Man of the Match: Henry T for an out-standing performance in goal.

Game of two halves!

A Game of two halves at the Withymead on Sunday morning. Marshfield were 4-0 up at the break, with 2 goals apiece for the dynamic duo, Rory and Jeremy. It could have been more as Callum and Mas dominated the midfield and set up chance after chance. Lewis and Sam were flying down the wings and only desperate defending from Westbury kept the score down. The two Josh's marshalled the defence well and Henry was reduced to a spectator! However, it was a different story in the second half and Westbury were a different team, they stifled posession in midfield and looked dangerous on the break. At 5-3 things were getting nervy, unfortunately for Westbury they scored an own goal and that was that. Another good win for Marshield, but Mike and Paul might want to review the half time team-talk before the next match!

Scorers for Marshfield: Jeremy B 3, Rory S 2, Westbury OG.

Man of the Match: Josher for a cool and calm display at the back.

Mud Bath!

Marshfield finished the league season with a good win at Melksham on Sunday. Although the game was played in bright sunshine, the conditions were awful following heavy rain the day before. Credit to both teams for playing some good football despite the very heavy state of the pitch. Marshfield got off to a good start with a fantastic goal from Lewis, who lobbed the keeper from the edge of the area following a typical mazy run up the left wing. As the players struggled to pass the ball through the mud, Marshfield began to dominate the midfield and scored two more before half time thanks to Mas and Josher. The second half saw continued pressure from the visitors and Josher, given a more roving role than normal, scored two quick goals to complete his hat-trick. Rory and Aneiron caused all sorts of problems for Melksham down the right-hand side, creating space for Jeremy to slot the sixth goal with a cool finish. Callum rounded off the scoring with a good run and well-struck shot to beat the Melksham keeper. Special mention must go the back four of Elias, Josh, Seb and Alexander, who defended brilliantly and made sure Henry had a relatively quiet game. Seb even got a rare foray forward to take a penalty as the game drew to a close. His firmly struck spot kick was well saved by the goalie.

Scorers for Marshfield: Lewis, Josher 3, Mas, Jeremy, Callum.

Man of the Match: Callum, for a very good impression of Steven Gerrard.
