Results for 08/09 Season. Click here for latest league position. Marshfield Juniors 1 Bradford Town Youth 1 Nail Biter in the Sun It was another tough match for the U13's on Sunday. Playing against 10 men, Marshfield started well and had control of the game from the start. Callum and Mas pulled the strings in midfield, feeding Sam and Lewis down the flanks. The three up front, Rory, Jerm and Will, caused problems for the opposition defence but never quite found the way through. Despite all their dominance Marshfield were limited to a couple of chances, with the Bradford goalie making a fine save with his feet when Jerm finally broke through the Bradford defence. At the back Marshfield looked untroubled, Josher was his calm and unflappable self and controlled the back line well. Chopper and Seb played their part, snuffing out any threat from Bradford. Henry hardly touched the ball in the first half. Mike used his substitutes well with Alexander, and the two Harrys coming on and blending seamlessly into the team. It took a penalty to finally break the deadlock. Callum was probing down the left and when the ball rebounded high in the air, he got a shove in the back from the Bradford right back. The referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. The correct decision although it was a soft penalty for Bradford to concede. Josher made no mistake with the spot kick, sending the keeper the wrong way. Half time 1-0 to Marshfield. The second half was a different story. Bradford's superior size started to tell as they harried and hassled Marshfield into mistakes. They were quick on the break and big enough to cause problems all over the park. A goal looked inevitable and it eventually came after a defensive error from Marshfield put the Bradford centre forward one on one with Henry. A cool finish left Henry with no chance. Marshfield then started to look increasingly nervous and lost some of their shape, they retained the ball well but just couldn't find a way through the packed opposition defence. Callum made several telling runs, dribbling his way through the opposition, but couldn't find the killer pass to split the Bradford defence open. In fact as the game wore on, Bradford looked the more likely to win it. Marshfield's best chance of the second half came just minutes from the end, when Lewis went on a blistering run down the left and cut back inside his opposite number, he reached the byline and managed to get the ball into the danger area before being felled by a late challenge from a panicked Bradford defender. The crowd called for another penalty but nothing was given. Meanwhile the ball bobbled around the 6 yard box and several Marshfield players tried to stab it over the line before it was finally hoofed clear by Bradford. Lewis had nothing to show for his efforts and, to make matters worse, had to leave the field with a nasty looking ankle injury as a result of the challenge. A draw was probably a fair result overall, but Marshfield will rue the missed chances in the first half that could have sealed victory. Next up Castle Combe, again.
Marshfield Juniors 2 Castle Combe 6 Woe at the Withymead Another tough day at the office for the U13's. Facing one of the favourite's for the league with a depleted squad was always likely to be hard, and so it proved to be. Marshfield started brightly enough and looked dangerous going forward, thanks to the pace of Rory and Jerm up front. However, it was quite a scrappy affair until Marshfield livened things up a little with a cracking goal. From a swift attack down the left, Rory pulled the ball back to an unmarked Callum on the edge of the area and he had time to pick his spot and smashed the ball home past the Castle Combe keeper. However, Marshfield were starting to look shaky at the back as Castle Combe's big players started to punch holes. They were kept at bay by Henry, who produced another flash of genius with a quite stunning save to deny Castle Combe the equaliser. A fantastic volley from outside the box was screaming into the roof of the net when Henry, a metre off the ground and at full stretch, somehow managed to palm the ball over the cross bar. We have quite possibly seen the save of the season already. The opposition players were stunned into silence as the home crowd went wild. Even the Castle Combe coach admitted it was one of the best saves he had ever seen - Petr Cech and Edwin van der Saar included! Unfortunately, it was only a matter of time before the visitors found the net and once they started scoring they always looked dangerous. Some hesitant defending led to three scrappy goals and meant a 3-1 lead for Castle Combe at the break. In the second half, the visitors picked up where they left off and scored another 3 goals, without reply, to make it 6-1. It looked like Marshfield were in for their first real hammering in 3 years. But all credit to the team who seemed to find a second wind in the last 15 minutes. They tightened things up at the back and started to push forward again looking for another goal. It came when Rory and Jerm broke again and Jerm curled a right foot shot from the edge of the area past the despairing dive of the Castle Combe keeper. However, it was little more than a consolation goal as the whistle went shortly afterwards.
Marshfield Juniors 2 Worton & Cheverell 4 What a Scorcher! A hard fought match ended in defeat for a spirited Marshfield team. Worton & Cheverell always provide a stern test and this match was no different. Playing in hot sunshine in front of a packed Withymead, both teams gave their all in a battle royal right to the final whistle. Marshfield threatened early on after some lovely passing movements, but it was the visitors that took the lead with a break away goal 10 minutes into the game. Henry pulled off a magnificent save to deny the first strike on goal, but could do little when the rebound was pulled back into the middle to find a Worton & Cheverell player standing unmarked in the box. One down quickly became two as Worton broke again and some fast footwork saw the defence split open and the ball slotted past the advancing Henry. Marshfield refused to let their heads go down and immediately piled on the pressure at the other end. After several close calls Marshfield finally got the goal they deserved when Callum broke down the right and pulled back a lovely cross from the byline, Will met the cross with a firm header and planted the ball into the back of the net. Marshfield thought they had equalised minutes later when Will this time pulled the ball back for Jeremy to slot home, only for the goal to be controversially ruled out by the linesman who ruled that the ball had gone out before the cross came in. They nearly scored again when an all mighty goal mouth scramble saw Worton clear the ball off the line and the home crowd began to get the feeling that it might be one of those days when the ball just wouldn't go in. 1-2 at half time and the players broke for much needed drinks. The second half was just as frantic with end to end action, both sides giving their all and having chances to score. It was Worton that scored the crucial 3rd goal thanks to a huge slice of luck, a weak shot through a crowded penalty area took a wicked deflection off a Marshfield player, leaving Henry completely wrong footed as the ball rolled into the opposite corner. Marshfield, urged on by Mike and Paul and a noisy, partisan crowd, roared back up the pitch and soon scored to narrow the deficit again. This time it was Jeremy on target after being put clear he shrugged off a couple of challenges and side footed the ball past the Worton keeper. The visitors looked worried as Marshfield piled forward looking for the equaliser but, unfortunately, the home team were undone by another quick break from Worton, who restored their 2 goal cushion. But still Marshfield refused to give up and put everything they had into a frantic last 10 minutes. Several times the ball rolled agonisingly just past the Worton goal and their keeper pulled off a string of excellent saves. It just wasn't to be Marshfield's day but at the end of the game, it was the visitors who were relieved to hear the final whistle
Westbury Town Youth 2 Marshfield Juniors 11 Sunshine Football What a pleasure to see the sun again and Marshfield took full advantage. A strong start saw some some excellent passing and movement with Marshfield's new experimental formation causing problems for Westbury. Marshfield seemed to have acres of space and played the ball around beautifully. Callum and Mas controlled the midfield, moving the ball around and feeding Lewis and Sam on the flanks. Rory and Jerm were joined upfront by debutant Will and they caused all sorts of problems in the opposition defence. Constant changes of position and direction opened up chance after chance for the visitors. It was only a matter of time before Marshfield took the lead, and it came thanks to a great corner by Callum from the left. His vicious curling kick was heading in before being helped on its way by a Westbury defender. That opened the flood gates and more goals quickly followed. Will scored the second with a lovely finish after being put clean through and Jerm bundled the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble for number 3. Mas was on hand twice in quick succession to volley in from close range and Jerm added another before the break. 6 - 0 at half time and it could have been more. The second half started in the same manner, with Marshfield mounting attack after attack. Jerm completed his hat-trick with a neat finish, side footing the ball past the advancing keeper, before Rory scored the goal of the game. Marshfield won the ball in midfield, Callum fed Lewis on the left wing who sprinted past the Westbury full back, his perfectly weigted cross was met by Rory at the near post, who guided the ball in with a lovely header. At the other end the defence was marshalled superbly by the two Joshes, Alexander ran his heart out and Seb put in some trademark crunching tackles. Henry had little to do in goal but pulled off a couple of comfortable saves, when Westbury finally broke through. Back at the other end, Lewis added number 9 with a good poachers goal, pouncing on the ball when it was spilled by the Westbury goalie. Soon afterward Jerm added his fourth and Marshfield were in double figures. That led to a rush of blood to the head as Marshfield all piled forward in a attempt to get on the score sheet. The resulting holes at the back let in Westbury who finally scored despite Henry's despairing dive. They quickly added a second after Henry had parried the ball onto the cross bar only to see it bounce down just over the line. But it was Marshfield who fittingly had the last word with Jerm scoring his 5th.

Scorer for Marshfield: Josher (pen).
Magic moment: Seb's diving tackle to take the ball off the opposition winger in the first half. Harshly given as a foul, but John Terry would have been proud.
Man of the Match: Callum, who ran himself into the ground for the team and never, ever gave up.
Man of the Match: Josher for a calm and collected display at the back in the face of some ferocious attacking play.
